Wire Sizes and Lengths for the RP-V Controllers

This section provides recommendations on wire sizes and lengths for the RP-V controllers.

For more information, see RP-V Models .

The recommendations are for guidance only. Other wire sizes and lengths may be used, depending on wiring rules and when appropriate.

Important:

With central transformer wiring, the wire length (distance to the transformer) must be limited to maintain minimum 24 VAC power level to the RP-V controller. Larger wire size (cross-sectional area) helps reduce voltage drop on the 24 VAC line. For more information, see Grounding and Power for Systems with RP-V Controllers .

  1. Use wires rated for at least 90 °C (194 °F).
  2. With central transformer wiring, the wire length (distance to the transformer) must be limited to maintain minimum 24 VAC power level to the RP-V controller. Larger wire size (cross-sectional area) helps reduce voltage drop on the 24 VAC line.
  3. Only available on the RP-V-5C-M controller model.
  4. Digital or counter inputs.
  5. Supervised, voltage, current, or resistive inputs.
  6. Confirm the voltage drop from the external load current and the wire resistance (the product of the wire size and length) to obtain the appropriate voltage arriving at the controlled field device (load), to reliably energize and maintain the control action.
